It’s okay to feel overwhelmed by the amount of music sites out there today. As a music fan, you probably don’t know where to turn. You probably don’t even realize that there are hundreds of thousands of amazing independent artists waiting to be heard by you. And the worst part is that they would probably blow your mind. It’s just a struggle trying to get to them.
This post is intended to alleviate you from those struggles. The fact of the matter is that although there are tons of music sites out there today, some of them actually work. We hope that the following information helps you decipher between them.
10. Bloson
The music portion of this site is pretty straightforward. The site is built around the premise of content discovery. Their departments consist of videos, music, and even shopping.
For music, as soon as you click on an artist, the page suggests a handful of similar artists. This is great as you go down to the more independent artists on the site.
9. Zune
Even if you don’t own a Microsoft Zune, this site can be very useful since it goes one step further to not only reveal similar artists, but also influences of the artists. That could be cool if you are looking for some of the older independent artists that you never got into.
8. One Track Mind
One Track Mind is a simple concept. The site reviews a new song everyday on their blog. Even though you may not love the song being reviewed, it helps you discover a new artist everyday.
7. Music Roamer
Artist mapping and cloud creation has been a really cool feature for music discovery within the last year or so. Music Roamer takes that idea and runs with it. It’s a neat little artist-mapping site that actually allows you to stream the songs of the suggested artists directly from their site. That’s a very cool and unexpected feature.
6. Tune Glue
Tune Glue is very straightforward and extremely easy to use. The site starts out as only a search bar in the top right. As soon as you enter an artist, the site maps out related artists. It’s similar to MusicRoamer, but don’t get it wrong – Tune Glue started it all. That’s why they are ranked higher here.
5. Mog
Mog has been one of my personal favorite music sites since 2007. It started out as just a network of music bloggers connecting and sharing music news, thoughts, and ideas. Now, with the new “all-you-can-eat” streaming service that they are offering for $3.99 a month, a Mog user has the ability to stream virtually any song for free at any time. The social aspect of allowing the users to create and share playlists make this a very good tool for discovering new music.
4. The Hype Machine
The Hype Machine is a music blog aggregate that swallows up and spits out the best content from the entire web. It’s really an incredible thing. The two downsides to this site, however, are that it encompasses every aspect of music and it can be too much information at times. Regardless, it can be a music discoverer’s dream come true if you have the time to put into it.
3. Crazed Hits
I have been a fan of Crazed Hits for quite some time now. It has to be the best music blog that I subscribe to via RSS. Everyday, the site reveals a hot new artist that is supposedly being “scouted” by A&Rs. Therefore, it’s an amazing bragging tool to utilize and taunt your friends with. With Crazed Hits, you can become the next hit-picker.
2. The Sixty One
The Sixty One is the Digg of the music industry. Similar to Songclash in a way, users can vote for songs and then the system caters its song selection to the user’s interest. You can spend an entire day on this site and end up with a list of new amazing artists to download and/or purchase later that night. The amount of great music that subsists on the site is astounding.
1. We Are Hunted
We Are Hunted is hands-down my favorite music website on the Internet right now. The site feeds all of the most popular songs on the Internet and creates a virtual streaming chart that resembles an interactive radio station. You can also select different feeds such as “Twitter” to display what’s being talked about most on Twitter, and separate the results by genre.
If you are looking to find more good new music rather than bad, this is the #1 site to waste your time on.
BONUS: Songclash
We didn’t want to toot our own horns in this section. Instead, we wanted our readers to realize that music discovery is a major reason that Songclash has been constructed.
Aside from being able to provide a voice to a musical contest, what is to not be overlooked is how our system feeds out all of the artists existing in the genre(s) you are most interested in. So essentially, you will eventually hear every single song that an artist has uploaded – just as long as you continue voting in the battles.
