70 Million By Hold Your Horses

March 9, 2010

It’s not often that I’m blown away by a new music video. An up and coming group called Hold Your Horses has released this great video for “70 Million.” The video shows the group’s members within some of the most classic paintings and pieces of art in history.

It also doesn’t hurt that the song seems to be a potential indie gem.

Enjoy!

What a refreshing way to end a long week of hard work. Check out this very cool rendition of “Take On Me.” It’s being played on a ukelele nonetheless.

Enjoy!

OK Go Does It Again

March 3, 2010

OK Go must know that their music isn’t mind blowing. Once again, they have created a music video that is so aesthetically pleasing that it has created a viral campaign in itself.

Ever since the band’s video for “Here It Goes Again” a few years back, the band has been determined to outdo themselves with every single video. A few months ago, they brought out the “wow” factor with the video for “WTF?. You can watch that one here.

The band’s latest video, “This Too Shall Pass” presents the viewer with an amazing Rube Goldberg sequence – quite possibly the longest ever.

Watch the video below and leave your comments.

10 Free Ways To Discover New Music

March 1, 2010

It’s okay to feel overwhelmed by the amount of music sites out there today. As a music fan, you probably don’t know where to turn. You probably don’t even realize that there are hundreds of thousands of amazing independent artists waiting to be heard by you. And the worst part is that they would probably blow your mind. It’s just a struggle trying to get to them.

This post is intended to alleviate you from those struggles. The fact of the matter is that although there are tons of music sites out there today, some of them actually work. We hope that the following information helps you decipher between them.

10. Bloson

The music portion of this site is pretty straightforward. The site is built around the premise of content discovery. Their departments consist of videos, music, and even shopping.

For music, as soon as you click on an artist, the page suggests a handful of similar artists. This is great as you go down to the more independent artists on the site.

9. Zune

Even if you don’t own a Microsoft Zune, this site can be very useful since it goes one step further to not only reveal similar artists, but also influences of the artists. That could be cool if you are looking for some of the older independent artists that you never got into.

8. One Track Mind

One Track Mind is a simple concept. The site reviews a new song everyday on their blog. Even though you may not love the song being reviewed, it helps you discover a new artist everyday.

7. Music Roamer

Artist mapping and cloud creation has been a really cool feature for music discovery within the last year or so. Music Roamer takes that idea and runs with it. It’s a neat little artist-mapping site that actually allows you to stream the songs of the suggested artists directly from their site. That’s a very cool and unexpected feature.

6. Tune Glue

Tune Glue is very straightforward and extremely easy to use. The site starts out as only a search bar in the top right. As soon as you enter an artist, the site maps out related artists. It’s similar to MusicRoamer, but don’t get it wrong – Tune Glue started it all. That’s why they are ranked higher here.

5. Mog

Mog has been one of my personal favorite music sites since 2007. It started out as just a network of music bloggers connecting and sharing music news, thoughts, and ideas. Now, with the new “all-you-can-eat” streaming service that they are offering for $3.99 a month, a Mog user has the ability to stream virtually any song for free at any time. The social aspect of allowing the users to create and share playlists make this a very good tool for discovering new music.

4. The Hype Machine

The Hype Machine is a music blog aggregate that swallows up and spits out the best content from the entire web. It’s really an incredible thing. The two downsides to this site, however, are that it encompasses every aspect of music and it can be too much information at times. Regardless, it can be a music discoverer’s dream come true if you have the time to put into it.

3. Crazed Hits

I have been a fan of Crazed Hits for quite some time now. It has to be the best music blog that I subscribe to via RSS. Everyday, the site reveals a hot new artist that is supposedly being “scouted” by A&Rs. Therefore, it’s an amazing bragging tool to utilize and taunt your friends with. With Crazed Hits, you can become the next hit-picker.

2. The Sixty One

The Sixty One is the Digg of the music industry. Similar to Songclash in a way, users can vote for songs and then the system caters its song selection to the user’s interest. You can spend an entire day on this site and end up with a list of new amazing artists to download and/or purchase later that night. The amount of great music that subsists on the site is astounding.

1. We Are Hunted

We Are Hunted is hands-down my favorite music website on the Internet right now. The site feeds all of the most popular songs on the Internet and creates a virtual streaming chart that resembles an interactive radio station. You can also select different feeds such as “Twitter” to display what’s being talked about most on Twitter, and separate the results by genre.

If you are looking to find more good new music rather than bad, this is the #1 site to waste your time on.

BONUS: Songclash

We didn’t want to toot our own horns in this section. Instead, we wanted our readers to realize that music discovery is a major reason that Songclash has been constructed.

Aside from being able to provide a voice to a musical contest, what is to not be overlooked is how our system feeds out all of the artists existing in the genre(s) you are most interested in. So essentially, you will eventually hear every single song that an artist has uploaded – just as long as you continue voting in the battles.

The Most Copycatted Song in History

February 26, 2010

Have you ever noticed that a lot of the most popular songs have similar elements to them? Do you ever wonder how great songs are inspired?

Well, the video below displays the evidence that Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” is the foundation to a great deal of popular songs thereafter.

Watch the video and leave your comments on whether or not you agree with the video’s publisher. Do all of these songs sound the same, or is this guy completely delusional?

American Idol Contestants Using Social Media

February 24, 2010

American Idol is under way! After the airing of the first live episode last night, it is evident that we are in for a heck of a season. And that’s without the realization that this is Simon Cowell’s last hurrah on the show. That should mean that this will be his nastiest and most entertaining year yet. That’s assuming he decides to go out with a bang.

The top 12 men are set to hit the stage tonight. After tonight, the Songclash team should be able to start picking their favorites. Perhaps we will even start a fun pool on this blog that allows our team and any of you to pick their winner and place a wager on your confidence. Tell us in the comments if you think that’s a fun idea or not. We’d love to have a few of you on board with it.

One thing I wanted to report on is that American Idol is allowing and encouraging all of the contestants to have their own Twitter and Facebook pages. How cool is that? Not only is this smart for the popularity of the show, but it really allows all of the contestants to capture and interact with all of their fans in real-time. Assuming that the show isn’t trying to monopolize the contestants by owning the rights to their accounts, this is a great thing for the contestants’ longevity in the music industry. During the show, they’re bound to hundreds of thousands of fans and followers. After the show is over, instead of disappearing, they can continue to interact and take advantage of their past success; at least the smart ones will do that.

So, as we look forward to another great season of American Idol, we would love to hear your thoughts. We intend to continue talking about the show on this blog so stay tuned for more.
